When it comes to diamond color, less is best. Transparent diamonds, also known as colorless orwhite diamonds, are more valuable than diamonds with hues or tints of color, all other qualities being the same. There are also colored diamonds, which are the rarest of the rare.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) defines diamond color on a scale from D to Z, D being colorless diamonds and Z representing the bottom end of the scale. Diamonds are color-graded by comparing them to diamonds of known colors under precise conditions and controlled light. The untrained eye cannot differentiate between slight differences between colors.
Colored Diamonds
Diamonds come in pink (as popularized by celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez), red, yellow, blue (e.g. the Hope Diamond), browns and other colors.
Colored diamonds are outside the GIA scale of D to Z.
